Shakespeare's Language

Falstaff embellishing the tale of how he was robbed at Gadshill (from Henry IV, Part 1)
Painting by George Clint
Class
Today we will unravel some of the aspects of Shakespeare's Early Modern English that make it a bit strange for modern listeners: syntax, archaic pronouns, puns, and vocabulary, including some of his richly inventive insults.

All activities for today can be found on pages 13-18 of the class packet. For the original trading of insults between Prince Henry and Falstaff in Henry IV, Part I, see HERE.
